BAE Systems Directorate Building involved the construction of a new headquarters
building with engineering design offices and laboratory facilities. Our brief was to provide a ‘World Class’ office
building, of about 15,000 sq m.
The new building has a contemporary stone and glass frontage and a new main entrance facing onto Ferry Road, giving
access to a four storey atrium. This light and airy space, with striking blue polished plaster walls, forms the principal
circulation route through the building, and also provides the main link to the Production Halls.
From the atrium, east and west wings provide 3 storeys of offices, laid out on a 7.5m x 9m grid, fully air conditioned and with natural daylight to both faces. The result is a bright and adaptable office environment. In addition to the office accommodation, the third floor contains a number of testing laboratories and the management suite for the whole site; the latter providing exceptional views southwards to the centre of Edinburgh.
