EdinburghClient: BAE Systems Limited Budget: £18m
Occupying a corner location, opposite BAE Phase 1, this facility has been designed around a central,
top-lit atrium within a triangular plan form to maximize the potential of the site. The contemporary
interiors create a light and spacious working environment for the staff and provide approximately 14,500 sq m
of office and laboratory space over three floors with parking included at a lower ground level. From the ground
floor entrance, the main stair rises up to the atrium base, located at first floor level. This is intended
to be the heart of the building, providing a bright, airy public forum. In addition to forming the circulation route,
the atrium contains a coffee bar and is used as an informal meeting space.
A category B listed brick stair tower survives from the 1950’s building, which formerly occupied the site. It has been retained and integrated into the new glazed frontage to Crewe Toll to provide a contrast of materials and a defining vertical element to the main entrance and the corner. |
