The Hurd Rolland Partnership was founded largely on
the principles of urban and architectural conservation works in the 1960s and 1970s. These principles have developed to embrace environmentally responsible design, with the practice being at the forefront of sustainable design in Scotland. We pursue a policy of ”Pragmatic Sustainability” which encompasses the following principles: Achieving a minimum of compliance with building standards in energy performance. Anticipation of future costs through legislative reform, including: energy, environmental taxes and insurance costs in relation to environmental change. Consideration of opportunities in terms of new sustainable technologies. Awareness of appropriate life-cycle costing. Sensitivity to context
A balanced approach to urban architectural design
Not requiring a drastic shift in operation of client organisation Responsiveness to changing client needs over the lifetime of a building Serious consideration of user comfort and performance Clients benefit commercially from: Cheaper capital costs, cheaper running costs, higher productivity, improved image A balance between optimal capital and life cycle cost should deliver a best value for money option In achieving these aims, the practice now seeks to achieve a BREEAM "excellent” rating for all of its buildings. In the case of buildings such as theatres and laboratories, this requires the use of a bespoke assessment that the practice can develop with BRE.
Technologies with which the practice has experience:
Building integrated photovoltaics Passive ventilation design Daylight enhancement systems Small-scale integrated wind turbine systems Projects either complete or under development, which illustrate this policy in practice, include: New Student Residences, Aberdeen University Auchterarder Parish Church Arts Centre Edinburgh University: Williamson Building (Multi-Science Laboratory) Bell Building (Electronics Laboratory) Rankine Building (Engineering Laboratory) Harrison House, Lasswade, Edinburgh Heriots Junior School, Edinburgh |
