Alexander Graham Bell Building
King’s Buildings, University of Edinburgh

Client: University of Edinburgh

Project value: £3.1m

As the first truly “green” building to be constructed by the University of Edinburgh, the project has allowed the Hurd Rolland Partnership to develop the principle of “pragmatic sustainability”. A scientific approach was followed to design “passive” environmental systems, while advanced computer-modelling determined thermal, solar and ventilation criteria. The introduction of an innovative system for day lighting, “Serraglaze”, has given the occupants an opportunity to make significant savings in the use of electrical lighting.

Detailed discussion with the clients allowed the development of a precise brief to achieve the most effective spatial solutions to meet complex interdepartmental, operational and security requirements. As the second phase of a commission to design and construct three projects at the University, this scheme benefited from a successful working relationship established with the client.
