Of Kings, Queens and Master Craftsmen
Rossend Castle was originally built in 1119, on a vantage point overlooking the Firth of Forth.
It was initially extended in 1382 and subsequently, in 1563.
Mary Queen of Scots was among the many Royal visitors and legend suggests that Queen Margaret’s relics may also lie buried there. The castle was occupied by Oliver Cromwell in 1651 and also by “Bobbing John” Erskine, The Earl of Mar, during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715. As a truly outstanding example of period master - craftsmanship, the tempera painted ceiling was probably the castle's finest feature. The ceiling was donated to the National Museum of Antiquities, where it still remains on public display.
